Quick answer
- GST becomes mandatory around ₹40 lakh turnover for goods and ₹20 lakh for services (thresholds subject to change) — but inter-state sellers and most e-commerce sellers need it from day one (a narrow exemption exists for small within-state-only sellers of goods).
- Registration on gst.gov.in has no government fee and typically takes about 7 working days with Aadhaar authentication.

A trader in Patiala's Adalat Bazaar loses a ₹3 lakh wholesale order because the buyer's accountant asks for a GST invoice he cannot issue. A freelancer gets her Amazon seller application bounced for the same missing number. GST registration is free and takes a week — the expensive part is not knowing when you need it.
Do you even need GST? The real thresholds
Registration is mandatory once your annual turnover crosses the threshold — but the threshold is not the whole story.
Read that third card twice. Sell goods from Punjab to a buyer in Delhi, or list products on Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho, and the turnover threshold usually does not protect you — registration is generally compulsory from the first rupee. (Since October 2023 there is a narrow exemption for small sellers making only within-state supplies of goods via marketplaces using an enrolment number — but conditions apply, and many marketplaces still ask for a GSTIN.) This single rule catches more small sellers off guard than anything else in GST.
Why smart small businesses register voluntarily
Input tax credit: registered businesses claim back the GST paid on stock, equipment and even the shop's billed expenses — that is real money, not paperwork. Big buyers demand it: companies, government tenders and large distributors simply will not deal with unregistered vendors, because your missing GSTIN breaks their own credit chain.
Credibility: a GSTIN on your invoice and signboard signals a real, bankable business — it helps with current accounts, business loans and marketplace onboarding. For many Patiala traders, voluntary registration pays for itself with the first big client it unlocks.
Regular vs Composition: the trade-off in one table
The composition scheme (for turnover up to about ₹1.5 crore, subject to change) trades paperwork for restrictions. Choose deliberately — switching mid-year is messy.
| Regular scheme | Composition scheme | |
|---|---|---|
| Tax rate | Normal GST rates per item | Low flat rate on turnover |
| Input tax credit | Yes | No |
| Collect GST from customers | Yes, on invoice | No — pay from own pocket |
| Inter-state sales | Allowed | Not allowed (goods) |
| Returns burden | GSTR-1 + GSTR-3B, monthly/quarterly | Quarterly payment + one annual return |
| Best for | B2B, e-commerce, growth plans | Small local B2C shops and eateries |
Documents that make or break approval
Nine out of ten rejections we see are address-proof problems. Get this list right and approval is boring — exactly how you want it.
- 🪪PAN of proprietor / firmthe GSTIN is built on this PAN — details must match exactly
- 🆔Aadhaarwith a live mobile number — needed for OTP-based Aadhaar authentication
- 📷Passport-size photoof the proprietor or all partners/directors, JPEG as per portal size limits
- 🏪Business address proofown place: electricity bill; rented: rent agreement + owner's NOC + owner's bill — the #1 rejection point
- 🏦Bank proofcancelled cheque, passbook front page or statement showing name, account number and IFSC

Want your GSTIN without a single rejection?
Send your documents on WhatsApp — we file it right the first time. After the GSTIN: your new duties
Registration is the start, not the finish. Regular-scheme businesses file GSTR-1 (sales) and GSTR-3B (summary + tax payment) monthly, or quarterly under the QRMP option for smaller turnovers. Composition dealers pay quarterly and file one annual return.
Two rules people forget: display the registration certificate at your premises and the GSTIN on your signboard, and put the GSTIN on every invoice with the correct format and HSN codes. Officers do check on inspection.
Mistakes that quietly cost money
Wrong HSN code: it drives the tax rate; a wrong code means wrong tax on every single invoice until someone notices — usually an officer. Sloppy address proof: a rent agreement without the owner's NOC and electricity bill is the classic REG-03 query. Ignoring the query deadline: a REG-03 unanswered within its window gets the application rejected, and you start over.
A GST number is free. A GST number filed wrong costs you a rejection, a month, and sometimes the client you wanted it for.
